Qualifications

The Faculty offers opportunities for the students to study French and or German during KS4. The courses lead to an academic GCSE qualification from the AQA exam board which is looked upon very favourably by both Universities and future employers. We are extremely proud of our excellent results, and we will guarantee a qualification for well-focused and hard-working MFL students.

The Faculty not only teaches French & German but also facilitates Spanish & Polish GCSEs.

During KS4 all students study a series of topics in French and German through the 4 skill areas ( Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing ) and in a variety of tenses. The topics broadly represent following 3 areas:

IDENTITY AND CULTURE 

1. Me, my family and friends [relationships with family & friends; marriage; partnership]
2. Technology in everyday life [social media; mobile technology]
3. Free-time activities [music; cinema & TV; food & eating out; sport]

4. Customs and festivals

 LOCAL, NATIONAL, INTERNATIONAL AND GLOBAL AREAS OF INTEREST

1. Home, town, neighbourhood & region
2. Social issues [charity; voluntary work; healthy living]
3. Global issues [the environment; poverty; homelessness]
4. Travel & Tourism

All students complete written and oral assessments during the course, and reading and listening papers during the formal examination period in May / June of year 11. The assessment is summarised as follows:

During the course the students will also have the opportunity to:

-Visit our partner school in Saverne, France and Nürnberg, Germany.

-Experience aspects of French and German culture during our stay in Saverne, France which includes a hop over into Germany.

-Visit the Birmingham German Christmas Market

-Attend revision sessions run on Tuesday afternoons for French and German to support with their languages.

Where can languages take me?

Many areas of work are more accessible [or more profitable] with a language GCSE; jobs do not only include teaching and translation but also in hospitality and tourism, publishing and media, education, advertising and marketing amongst many more!
