Mathematics at Key Stage 4

Maths is more than the sum of its parts. It is about seeing patterns in nature and predicting an outcome. It is about learning how to work systematically, and then seeking a counterexample. It is about constructing a question and unravelling all it has to offer to the world around us.

At Earl Mortimer College our aim is that through a broad range of activities, and a focus on deep understanding, our students come to an inquisitive questioning of their world. Their Maths enables inquiry, broadens horizons and opens doors: their Maths matters.

The Maths curriculum is planned and delivered so that all students can be Involved, Improving and Inspired, whilst developing problem-solving skills, building independence and learning how to use representations and manipulatives to build mathematical networks.

‘Involved’ students of any ability can access the content, are engaged and resilient with their learning and are aware of their own understanding. Over time students become more independent as they become increasingly involved in their own learning.

‘Improving’ students develop fluency within a topic, whilst relating it to the wider body of Maths they have already learned. They are able to transfer knowledge into long-term memory and can access a diverse range of questions.

‘Inspired’ students strive to achieve their best and are proactive in making the most progress possible given their starting point. Their enjoyment of Maths spreads to their peers and encourages them to look at pursuing mathematics beyond school.

GCSE Mathematics

Our students complete the Edexcel GCSE in Mathematics.
