Welcome to the Religion, Ethics and Philosophy Department (REP).

Here at Earl Mortimer College we focus on educating our students on the different religions, cultures and traditions throughout the world. It is vital that our students are given the tools needed to work within such a diverse and multicultural society.

REP at Earl Mortimer College is a very popular subject, being taught from Year 7 through to Year 13. Students participate in a range of activities including group work, role play, independent study, ICT, guest visitors, trips and much more. The lesson content encourages students to engage in lively debates; helping them to express their opinions whilst listening to the opinions of others.

REP Curriculum aims

Learning and undertaking activities in REP contribute to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people to become:

• successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
• confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
• responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
• tolerant , well rounded individuals who can respond maturely to differing opinions.

The Importance of REP

REP is vital for students to both understand and engage with the world around them, and is fundamental to allowing students to express themselves in a safe and nurturing environment.

 In studying REP, students develop an ability to construct well-argued, well informed, balanced and structured arguments.  They are able to engage with both religious and non- religious views gaining the tools needed to live in a pluralistic society and global community. REP empowers students to have the confidence to express their opinions maturely and effectively whilst appreciating the diversity around them. It gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their own spiritual and moral values whilst allowing them to respond to “Big questions”. In the simplest terms, REP is an indispensable part of the curriculum which aims to help students seek answers, gain independence and provide tools to lead a good life on their journey into adulthood.
