Music at Key Stage 3 & 4

What do we want our students to learn?
Across the Key Stage 3 Music Curriculum, students develop their composition, performance, listening and appraisal and evaluation skills. Music at EMC is all about building up pupils confidence to develop their creativity and performance technique.
We aim:
- To encourage students to express and promote their enjoyment of music and its importance in everyday life
- To promote the learning and development of team work, when working within a musical ensemble
- To enable students to reach their full potential in music, encouraging learners to compose and perform.
How is our curriculum designed?
Year 7 – Key knowledge and skills of music are embedded e.g. key words, rhythm, the elements of music, basics of notation. We also take a look at world music when studying Samba and Gamelan. Key skills within these topics include paired and group work alongside creative skills when composing and notating students own music.
Year 8 – Development of instrument specific skills and composition e.g. keyboard, ukulele, composing your own pieces of blues music. Students develop their understanding of chords when playing ukulele, accurate use of finger numbers when playing the keyboard. They also develop their knowledge of specific styles of music such as Reggae and Blues and the political and historical impact of these styles of music.
Year 9 – Development of more focused listening activities and more challenging performance and composition tasks e.g. Film Music, Rock and Roll
Year 10 and 11 – Development of individual performance and composition opportunities, in depth understanding of exam content knowledge alongside employability skills such as collaborative learning, organization, time management and meeting deadlines
